Education Director

The Allbritton Journalism Institute, founded in 2023, aims to restore journalism’s role in our democracy by fostering a new generation of reporters, from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives, who produce work that Americans trust.

Each year, 10 early-career journalists are selected for a highly competitive two-year fellowship, taking classes with AJI’s world-class faculty while covering government, policy and politics for NOTUS, a D.C.-based news outlet staffed by AJI fellows and veteran reporters and editors.

Job Description

AJI is seeking a full-time Education Director to lead the training and continuing education of AJI fellows — and to work closely with AJI’s Executive Director and wider team to help establish AJI as a leading educational institution for journalists.

The Education Director will:

  • Work closely with the Executive Director, oversee AJI’s curriculum — including the initial “boot camp” for new fellows — as well as ongoing training and professional development opportunities for fellows.
  • Manage faculty and mentor recruitment, relationship building and scheduling on behalf of AJI.
  • Participate in AJI’s annual fellowship selection process, and help expand and deepen relationships with a range of colleges, universities and mission-aligned institutions.
  • Contribute to the long-term career development of fellows by helping connect them with their next opportunities.
  • Help develop and launch an alumni support network.
  • Explore and evaluate additional education opportunities that AJI may offer over time.

Requirements for the position include:

  • Extensive experience working with next-gen journalists. Teaching and mentoring experience is a strong plus.
  • Strong knowledge of Washington political coverage.
  • Deep and recent familiarity with digital newsroom culture.
  • A varied set of professional experiences that will help inform professional support for next-gen journalists.
  • Belief in the mission of the Allbritton Journalism Institute: “To train journalists to seek truth in a fair, unbiased way, and to produce powerful political journalism that’s accepted as trustworthy and nonpartisan, which in turn supports a healthy, informed democracy,” bringing a spirit of collegiality, curiosity and humility to the role.

This position will be based out of AJI’s offices in Rosslyn, Virginia.

Salary Range: $150K – $200K, depending on level of experience.
