The Allbritton Journalism Institute has hired longtime journalist Alyssa Rosenberg to serve as its next education director.

Rosenberg will oversee training, mentoring and career development of AJI fellows, including cultivating and strengthening a network of journalism instructors and hiring managers. And she will further establish AJI as the leading educational institution for political journalists.

She was most recently the Letters and Community editor at The Washington Post, where she worked for more than a decade as a columnist and op-ed editor. Previously, she held editorial roles at ThinkProgress, Washingtonian, Government Executive and National Journal. In 2023, she was the recipient of the Gerald Loeb Award for Commentary. She co-hosts the “Across the Movie Aisle” podcast.

“Alyssa brings to AJI an extraordinary combination of journalistic talent and versatility, with a track record of innovation across platforms and technologies,” said AJI Executive Director Kevin Grant. “Just as importantly, she is an empathetic leader who will ensure the next-gen journalists who pass through our doors will continue to be incredibly well supported.”

Rosenberg added: “This is a moment of huge change in journalism — and just about everything else. I’ve loved watching from the outside as AJI fellows tackle unprecedented news cycles with clarity and insight. I can’t wait to start working with them to prepare for what’s next in Washington and in their own careers.”

She will start later this month.

The Allbritton Journalism Institute, founded by Robert Allbritton in 2023, aims to restore journalism’s role in our democracy by fostering a new generation of reporters, from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives, who produce work that Americans trust.

Each year, 10 early-career journalists are selected for a highly competitive two-year fellowship, taking classes with AJI’s world-class faculty while covering government, policy and politics for NOTUS
