Allbritton Journalism Institute welcomes inaugural Advisory Board members

Published

The nonpartisan nonprofit Allbritton Journalism Institute is delighted to announce its inaugural Advisory Board, an incredibly dynamic group of public interest journalists, educators, philanthropists and nonprofit leaders.

These advisors join AJI, which aims to restore journalism’s role in our democracy by fostering a new generation of reporters from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives, at a time of growth alongside the NOTUS newsroom.

These advisors will provide expert guidance and help further connect AJI’s work to an even wider range of constituents and partners. The organization is delighted to welcome:

  • Emily Barr, former President and CEO of Graham Media Group
  • Dr. Battinto L. Batts, Jr., Dean of Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University
  • Tom Huang, Assistant Managing Editor for Journalism Initiatives at The Dallas Morning News
  • John Kimelman, Journalist and Trustee, Henry L. Kimelman Family Foundation
  • Melissa Moss, President, Moss Advisors, LLC
  • Sonal Shah, former CEO at The Texas Tribune
  • Judy Woodruff, Senior Correspondent, PBS NewsHour

“Each one of these incredible leaders has shown a longstanding commitment to public interest media and the next generation of journalists who produce it,” said AJI Executive Director Kevin Grant. “We are fortunate to benefit from their expertise and their passion for the kind of world-class educational and professional support we provide.”

About The Allbritton Journalism Institute:

The Allbritton Journalism Institute, founded by Robert Allbritton in 2023, is a one-of-a-kind institution in Washington: a nonprofit educational organization that trains the political journalists of the future — using a teaching hospital model in partnership with NOTUS to accomplish that goal.

Each year, 10 early-career journalists are selected for a highly competitive two-year, full-time fellowship with benefits, taking classes with AJI’s world-class faculty while covering government, policy and politics for NOTUS.

AJI has been proud to receive additional support from institutions including Arnold Ventures, Google News Initiative, The Freedom Forum, Schmidt Family Foundation, Posner Foundation, Henry L. Kimelman Foundation and The Sandpiper Fund, as well as a group of more than 350 individual donors at various giving levels.
