Allbritton Journalism Institute Names Kevin Grant Next Executive Director

The Allbritton Journalism Institute announced today that Kevin Grant has been named its new executive director.

As its new executive director, Grant will be responsible for running the day-to-day operations of AJI, overseeing the educational program, the annual recruitment of AJI fellows, job placement for fellows upon completion of the program and fundraising to support AJI’s growth.

Grant served as the inaugural director of development at AJI, securing $2.5 million in revenue for its programs in his first year and helping to launch the Washington Bureau Initiative.

He previously co-founded and served in a number of leadership roles at The GroundTruth Project, the home of Report for America and Report for the World. During his time there, he oversaw more than 300 journalism fellowship positions in 50 countries, and helped build resources and infrastructure to place more than 750 reporters in more than 400 local newsrooms in every state plus Washington, D.C., Guam and Puerto Rico.

“I am thrilled that Kevin is taking on this project,” said Robert Allbritton, founder of the Allbritton Journalism Institute. “About two-and-a-half years ago, we launched the Allbritton Journalism Institute with the goal of training a new generation of smart political journalists. We have delivered on that promise, and I am looking forward to all of the tremendous things Kevin will build upon our strong foundation.”

Grant will begin in his new role on Jan. 1, 2026. He will succeed AJI’s current executive director, Tim Grieve, who will continue to serve as editor in chief of NOTUS.

“Tim has set an incredibly high standard for the role and for AJI itself,” Grant said. “It’s an honor to take up the mantle and bring everything I’ve learned over two decades in and around journalism to this extraordinary institution.”
